As the Lavender Capital of Texas®, Blanco is proud to celebrate all things lavender during the 6th Annual Blanco Lavender Festival, June 11-13 in Blanco, Texas. Recognized as the Official Lavender Festival of Texas and an authorized Go Texan event, the Blanco Lavender Festival will include a Lavender Market held on the grounds of the Old Blanco Country Courthouse, lavender growing and lavender-infused cooking demonstrations, and tours of local lavender farms. The Lavender Market will be open from 2-8pm on Friday, June 11, from 9am-6pm on Saturday, June 12, and from 9am-4:30pm on Sunday, June 13. As survey responses from the growing number of Lavender Festival participants confirm, the Lavender Market is a festival-goer’s dream, complete with music, wine tasting, educational demonstrations, and a variety of arts, crafts and lavender vendors. Representatives from four local lavender farms will have booth displays at this year’s Market. In addition to the Lavender Market, local farms will sponsor special events, farm tours, lavender gift shop items, and much more throughout the Lavender Festival Weekend. Each farm is located a short, scenic drive from downtown Blanco. Farm tour maps and information is available at the Blanco Chamber of Commerce office and website, as well as on farm websites. The Blanco Lavender Festival showcases the area’s newest rural industry in a county that has a rich agricultural and ranching tradition. After celebrating more than “150 Years of Friendly,” the region’s cotton fields of years past now feature with the rich color and scent of lavender. Native to the Mediterranean, lavender is now grown worldwide. Dating back to antiquity, lavender has been used to scent bathwater and enhance body care products. Egyptians used lavender oil for perfume. Ancient Romans used lavender to enhance cooking and to scent the air and provide soothing baths. Lavender is derived from the Latin “lavare,” meaning “to wash” or “to bathe.” Lavender oil has been used throughout history as a versatile and popular essential oil for aromatherapy. Charles VI of France demanded lavender-scented pillows each night. Elizabeth I required fresh lavender flowers each day. Today, clinical studies confirm lavender’s effectiveness as a relaxation aid and stress reliever. Researchers note lavender’s ability to curb depression and irritability. It also has soothing characteristics for insect bites, minor burns, and muscle aches or cramps, and antiseptic properties for use on cuts and scrapes. Lavender is also a favorite among herbalists and culinary experts. Blanco and the surrounding area offer diverse opportunities for food, fun, entertainment and recreation. Lavender Farms Showcased Heron’s Nest Herb Farm Heron’s Nest will host the Texas Lavender Women’s 5K and 10K Run/Walk on June 12. Registration is available at www.signmeup.com/68332. The farm will also offer hands-on essential oils workshops and a hands-on culinary session with Sibby Barrett. Hill Country Lavender Hill Country Lavender is Blanco’s original, commercial lavender farm, and will feature lavender growing sessions, cut your own lavender fields, and lavender wand and note card classes. Miller Creek Lavender Miller Creek Lavender will feature butterfly garden tours and blackberries, as well as lavender cooking demonstrations, and lavender art classes. Wimberley Lavender Farm Wimberley Lavender Farm will showcase its popular lavender lemonade and lavender ice cream specialties. The farm will also feature Hearts for Hooves miniature therapy ponies as well as massage or lavender footbaths from a licensed massage therapist. |
