2010 Hill Country Peach Harvest Best in Years
Favorable fall and winter conditions, along with no late killing frosts or harsh thunderstorms, have resulted in the best peach crop in years in the Texas Hill Country. Gillespie Country produces approximately 40% of the peaches grown in Texas, but more importantly, the peaches harvested in the Hill Country are known for truly exceptional taste and quality. The perfect combination of good soils, optimal moisture, warm days, and cool nights create this truly unique flavor that folks travel from far and wide to experience. Most growers in the Hill Country sell their peaches, along with blackberries, plums, tomatoes, squash, other fruits and vegetables, jellies, cobblers, ice cream and more directly to consumers at roadside stands and markets throughout the area. Since you can never be sure that what you are getting is truly a Hill Country peach at stores and markets outside the area, the surest way is to travel to the area and look for roadside stands and markets that display the Hill Country Fruit Council member logo. Then you will know that you are getting a freshly harvested peach directly from the grower. There is nothing like a fresh-picked Hill Country peach! It has been several years since there has been a good peach harvest in the Hill Country, and it may not happen next year again. Take advantage of the opportunity and drive to the Texas Hill Country this year. You will be glad you did! |
