Run for the Hills at Race in Bulverde

“Run for the Hills” is the theme of the 13th annual 5K “Run/Walk for the Hills” event to be held Saturday, May 5, 2012 in Bulverde, Texas, just north of San Antonio. The event is sponsored by the Bulverde Senior Center and the race headquarters will be at their location, 30280 Cougar Bend in Bulverde one mile west of Hwy 281, off of FM 1863.

The race, with various age categories, will start at 8:30 AM in Bulverde and winds its way through the Texas Hill Country. The registration fee is $25 prior to May 3rd and $30 after that. Registrations can be made online through or www.athleteguild.com or by calling (830) 438-3111 or (830) 708-2991 and requesting a registration form. Check in will be at 7:00 AM on race day. On May 3rd and 4th, from 9 AM to 6 PM, Anytime Fitness will offer a packet pickup and registration. Their address is 18673 Hwy 46 Pkwy, Suite C, Bulverde, Texas 78163. Their phone number is (830) 438-8971.

Free T-shirts and food snacks will be given to all registered runners and walkers. A new category this year will be the “Sleep Walker” registration. For $25 you receive a shirt, but you can skip the run. The first overall male and female will each receive a $50 prize. Awards will be given to male and female winners in 17 different age groups. Last year’s race attracted over 450 participants and that number is expected to be even larger this year.

Like last year, the “Wounded Warriors” at San Antonio’s military bases will be honored prior to the event. 75 individuals will be given free entrance to the race, in tribute to their dedication to our country.

Free health screenings will be available for all participants and visitors through a Health Fair, adding additional value to the event. A new addition this year is the Expo and Craft Show, which in the past was held later in May. A large Silent Auction is also planned.

Net profits from this event will go to the Senior Center. These funds will help local programs and activities in the community, focusing on education, health, exercise, socialization, “Meals on Wheels” and Senior Outreach Services.

Area schools, school organizations and businesses, are urged to participate in special competitions. A $300 award will be given to the school entering the largest group of participants. Awards will also be given by age group, gender and the business with the highest participation.

The Race Coordinator is Scott Wood of the Athletic Guild (830) 708-2991. Event Co-Chairmen are Toni Rogers (830) 885-7788 and Mary Austad (830) 885-5114. Mail inquiries should be sent to 5K Run/Walk, P.O. Box 450, Bulverde, Texas, 78163.
