Quicksand Grills Up Good Food at Wimberley Golf Course
| Wimberley, Texas | October 2012

Hungry? You’ll find the best hamburger in the Wimberley area at a place you might not expect: the grill at a golf course.

Yes, the tiny Quicksand Grill at Woodcreek’s Quicksand Golf Course is the place to find five different burgers that you’ll want to eat slowly because you’ll want to savor every bite.

They’ve got burgers topped with a choice of cheeses, topped with chiles, topped with mushrooms, and topped with green olives. You can add some bacon or double up on the meat. And these aren’t like those credit-card-thin burgers you’ll get at a fast food joint; these are two-fisted burgers, thick and tasty and juicy. And they’re served on sourdough buns, a touch that raises the quality of your meal several notches.

Cook and manager Ben Campbell will also be happy to accommodate just about any special request. He’ll even substitute a veggie patty on any burger at no extra charge.

Don’t forget the sides. Pick from regular fries, sweet potato fries, onion rings, or a side salad.

If you’re burger-ed out, the grill has several salads to choose from, and many people come in just for those. Or, you can choose chicken or a variety of sandwiches from the popular BLTs to chicken wraps to a turkey bacon melt. Or, maybe you'd like a steak finger, chicken finger, or hot dog basket to hit the spot just right. You’ll even find kids’ meals.

Ben also serves up specials each week. His unique meatloaf is on Wednesdays, his catfish is on Fridays. And other than those regular specials, he concocts special specials.

A word about the meatloaf - this isn’t like your school cafeteria meatloaf. This is thick and so tasty, you can watch people’s eyes light up when they’ve had it for the first time. Thank Ben.

“The first day I came to work here I was told that Wednesday was the meatloaf special and I better make up some,” Ben said. “I didn’t have a recipe so I looked around at the spices I had and put them all together. It’s worked real well.”

The odd thing about the meatloaf is that no one but Ben can make it.

“It’s funny. No one else can do it because I don’t measure anything. I just put it what seems right. It stays consistent, though,” he said.

Being located right on a golf course, many of the grill’s customers are golfers. But many non-golfers have discovered the secret of Quicksand. At lunchtime, you might find constables or UPS drivers, retirees, or youngsters.

Ben has been managing the grill for a year now. He loves it, mainly because he gets to work with wife Ann-Marie.

“We always wanted to work together and when the opportunity came up, I jumped at it,” Ben said.

Both Ben and Ann-Marie have college degrees, but are happy to keep learning about the restaurant business together.

“This is just an excellent company to work for,” she said. “And it’s personal. We know our customers’ names and what they like. And they know us.”

Although they both put in a lot of hours—often seven days a week—Ben has turned down job offers with more money and better hours.

“But I would have to drive into Austin,” he said. “I’d much rather be around my wife and daughter.”

The grill is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

And let’s not forget the reason for the grill’s existence: the Quicksand Golf Course.

It’s the Wimberley area’s only golf course, semi-private and open to public play.

Quicksand, a par 72 course, is located in Woodcreek and boasts 18 challenging holes designed by Bruce Littell. It opened in 1973.

Golfers here remember three things: the trees, the doglegs, and the deer.

Every hole on the front nine is a dogleg with the exception of two of the par 3s. On the back nine, the doglegs are less frequent, but that is where all of the trees come into play. And you just never know when a deer or two or ten will wander out onto the course.

The course is open seven days a week and tee times can be booked up to two weeks in advance. Quicksand also offers a fully stocked pro-shop right next to the grill.

The Quicksand Golf Course and Grill are located at 1 Pro Shop Lane in Woodcreek. For more information on the grill, call 512-847-7248. For more information on the golf course, call 512-847-9700 or visit the website at golfquicksand.com.
