Thanksgiving Tradition Comes to Hays County

Local runners lace up sneakers in preparation for the first annual Tanger Outlet Turkey Trot, produced by AllSports Timing. Activities and fun for the entire family take place at the Tanger Outlets on Thanksgiving morning Thursday, November 22.

Advanced and novice runners, avid walkers, trotters and kids are all welcomed to participate in the morning time festivities, set early enough to get some quality exercise in before the turkey is even finished roasting. The Kids Fun Run, kicks off at 8:30am and features a shorter track for youngsters. The 4-mile run kicks off at 9am, and features prizes provided by Hill Country Running for competitive runners in various age-groups. The 4-mile walk opens promptly after the run begins. Families can come donned in their best festive wear for a Thanksgiving costume contest. Kids can also enter the coloring contest, for the chance to have their design featured on the official race shirt next year.

“This event was created to promote local businesses and to dedicate proceeds to a cause for a non-profit organization,” says Chris Oroshiba, Producer of the Tanger Outlet Turkey Trot.

A portion of proceeds of the 2012 Tanger Outlet Turkey Trot will go to benefit local non-profit United Way of Hays County (UWHC). United Way of Hays County, in partnership with partner agencies, local services and key stakeholders, works to advance the common good for Hays County residents in education, income and health. Each year, UWHC and partner agencies provide life-changing services to tens of thousands of residents in need, including mentoring and education programs, emergency shelters and providing basic and transitional needs, health and preventative programs, and programs to strengthen individuals, children and families.

“This event will be conducted during the busiest shopping weekend of the year, and provides for large exposure and strong marketing potential for local businesses,” remarks Oroshiba.

The first 500 registrants pay $25, the next 500 participants, up to 1,000 or till 11/1, pay $30, and any participants past 1000 pay $35. The Kids Fun Run is only $10 per participant. Registration is available online, and each participant receives special offers, including a technical shirt. Register early to receive the official Tanger Center coupon book for Black Friday shopping, guaranteed for the first 1000 registrants. The first 500 participants also receive custom, personalized bibs.

“United Way of Hays County is very pleased to be the choice recipient for the Turkey Trot this year,” comments Michelle Harper, United Way of Hays County, executive director. “The Turkey Trot promotes health in our community, and is also a fun and safe holiday activity that families and friends can participate in together.”

Volunteers are needed for various positions of the race including; registration, traffic management, course management, aid stations and at the start/finish lines. Volunteers receive an official volunteer shirt and one free entry into the event.
