Four years ago, John and Shelli Carnes left the big city and their airline careers behind. They relocated about 20 miles west of Leakey and about 40 miles north of Uvalde, to the small community of Camp Wood, where they opened Holy Smoke BBQ in July of 2007. Spending his entire professional career in aviation as an airline dispatcher, pilot and operations manager for a Dallas-based airline, John spent his weekends perfecting his barbecue skills. Each first full weekend in August, the little Hill Country town of Camp Wood nearly doubles in size when it’s time to enjoy the Old Settlers’ Reunion.
