Volkssport (people's sport) began in Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein in late 1960. People attended organized walks of 10 km (6.2 m) or 20 km (12.4 m). The goal was to enjoy the outdoors, do something for your health and have fun. The American Volkssport started with Rev. Kenn Knopp, a native of Fredericksburg, Texas. Knopp was visiting relatives in Germany in 1976.and they took him on an afternoon "stroll", a 10 km Volksmarsch in the hills. He enjoyed the walk so much that he went to bed that night thinking about the possibilities. He was on the lookout for an activity that his hometown of Fredericksburg might sponsor as a reflection of its German heritage. When he returned home, he and some other citizens formed a walking club and called it Volkssport Verein Friedrichsburg which was approved by the International Volkssport Association.

The first Walkfest in Texas and the first in the United States were formed in 1976. Since then, W. Frank Suhr, of New Braunfels founded the New Braunfels Marsch-und Wandergruppe in 1980 and the Walkfest was attended by more than 600 people. Now there are clubs in all 50 states and in more than 40 countries around the world. Their motto is: Walk for Fun, Fitness and Friendship.
