Tejas Artist of the Month

Tejas Art Club has named Belinda Turk their September Artist of the Month. Turk joined the group two years ago after being invited by Olga Ibarra and has since then enjoyed trying her hand at painting and experimenting with new techniques. “I had serious doubts about joining at first because I couldn’t paint,” Turk said. “Olga insisted she would teach me and her enthusiasm and passion for art is contagious.” Turk began painting after joining the group and enjoys working on landscapes. When she gets tired or frustrated with painting the group allows her to bring in her crochet work to do. She has baby blankets, hats, afghans and scarfs that can be found at The Letter Garden, a monogram shop in Canyon Lake. “Olga sweetly tells me it is also a form of art,” Turk said. Turk has lived in Blanco for six years after moving here with her husband from Lake Conroe. She was formerly a professor of English at Sam Houston State University and her husband works in the oil business and still travels. She often travels as well. “The club members are so patient with me because I travel great deal and they always welcome me back warmly no matter how long I have been absent,” she said. Turk and her husband have 2 daughters, one that resides in California and another in Colorado, and 3 grandchildren.

Tax Relief Available for Some Flood Victims

Victims of the severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds and flooding that took place beginning on May 4, 2015 in parts of Texas may qualify for tax relief from the Internal Revenue Service.

Following recent disaster declarations for individual assistance issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the IRS announced today that affected taxpayers in Texas will receive tax relief.

The President has declared Harris, Hayes, and Van Zandt counties a federal disaster area. Individuals who reside or have a business in these counties may qualify for tax relief.

The declaration permits the IRS to postpone certain deadlines for taxpayers who reside or have a business in the disaster area. For instance, certain deadlines falling on or after May 4, and on or before Nov. 2, have been postponed to Nov. 2, 2015. If an affected taxpayer receives a penalty notice from the IRS, the taxpayer should call the telephone number on the notice to have the IRS abate any interest and any late filing or late payment penalties. But affected taxpayers who reside or have a business located outside the covered disaster area must call the IRS disaster hotline at 866-562-5227 to request this tax relief.
